Supporting the aging process with superfoods

Updated: May 9, 2019

As the body ages, it’s even more important to supplement our diets with nutrient-rich foods that support digestive health, joint mobility, dental strength and more. But at SCC, we know that not all foods are created equal. That’s why our menus frequently include ingredients that help support the aging process-like these:

Fatty fish: Tuna, mackerel, salmon and sardines are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and support heart health.

Nuts & Berries: Almonds, walnuts, peanuts and more are great sources of fiber and protein, which promote digestive health. Many berries, especially strawberries and blueberries, are high in antioxidants and can help lower blood pressure.

Olive oil: Cooking in olive oil can be greatly beneficial for the infusion of fatty acids, which have even been linked to lower rates of cancer and dementia.

Leafy greens: Leafy greens like spinach are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and iron, which contribute to controlling blood glucose, lowering cancer risk, and improving bone health.

Healthy dairy: Dairy options, such as greek yogurt, are high in protein and probiotics, and are lower in lactose, which helps maintain good digestive health.

By incorporating these superfoods into everyday meals, you can better support the nutritional needs of your aging loved one. At SCC, we believe that better nutrition means happier and healthier residents. If you want to learn more about our care homes, please visit our Mason, Dansville, or Stockbridge pages.
